Concreters in Kurri Kurri, 2327
Kurri Kurri sits 12.8 km south south-west of Maitland and 34 km north-west of Newcastle on Cessnock Road near the Hunter Expressway. Lang Street is the main street, where the Kurri Kurri Hotel of 1904 stands at the corner of Hampden Street. Proclaimed in October 1902 as the first Australian town fully planned before anything was built, it served the Stanford Merthyr and Pelaw Main collieries, and the small miners’ cottages of that boom still fill the grid. About half the homes have three bedrooms, on lots worked over for more than a century. On the old Hydro smelter land at Loxford, Regrowth Kurri Kurri was declared an urban release area in December 2022.
Low ground with a mining past
At 40 m the town lies in the steep upper part of the Wallis and Swamp-Fishery Creek catchment. Swamp Creek passes through the western streets on its way to Wentworth Swamp, and the catchment flooded in 1990, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016, so a slab on the western low ground is set to a checked level. Part of Kurri Kurri falls within the Tomalpin Mine Subsidence District; a driveway is exempt under most Subsidence Advisory guidelines, so the Spatial Viewer is checked before a garage slab is drawn.
Cottage lots and release lots
A miners’ cottage came with a narrow concrete strip for one car, and the everyday job in Kurri Kurri is taking that strip out and pouring a full-width driveway in its place. The deep back lot suits a shed or carport slab, a side path joins the two, and a patio goes where the back step ends. Regrowth Kurri Kurri brings new houses whose owners want exposed aggregate at the front and an alfresco pad behind, on filled lots where compaction is the first question.
What suits a Kurri Kurri house
Plain broom belongs on the cottage lots. Coloured concrete lifts a newer infill home, and exposed aggregate goes on the release fronts. Council’s crossing rule applies from the boundary to the road: plain, uncoloured, non-slip concrete where the street has kerb and gutter, and sealed gravel over a pipe culvert where it has none.
Kurri Kurri prices
The rates run per square metre, supplied and laid, at $95 to $185 for driveways by finish, exposed aggregate $130 to $185, paths $90 to $130, patios and alfresco $100 to $180, shed and garage slabs $110 to $150, and about $35 more to remove old concrete. What moves a Kurri Kurri price is access down the side of a cottage lot, which decides whether the mix is barrowed or pumped.
